2022-23 NFL playoff picture: Which teams are in, who’s still in the hunt

The playoff picture is starting to come into focus.

Which teams have clinched, which teams are in the hunt, and who’s out? We’ve done the math for you!

Here are all the clinching and elimination scenarios if the playoffs started Friday:

AFC Playoff Picture

TEAMS CURRENTLY IN:

No. 1 seed: Buffalo Bills (11-3, first in AFC East)

The Bills clinched a playoff spot by beating the Dolphins on Dec. 17. They can clinch the AFC East title in Week 16 with a win or a Dolphins loss. They also own the tiebreaker over Kansas City because of a head-to-head 24-20 victory Oct. 16. 

Remaining schedule: at Bears, at Bengals, vs. Patriots

No. 2: Kansas City Chiefs (11-3, first in AFC West)

The Chiefs clinched the AFC West title by beating the Texans on Dec. 18.

Remaining schedule: vs. Seahawks, vs. Broncos, at Raiders

No. 3: Cincinnati Bengals (10-4, first in AFC North)

The Bengals clinched a playoff berth in Week 16 after Thursday night’s loss by the Jets.

Remaining schedule: at Patriots, vs. Bills, vs. Ravens 

TEAMS IN THE HUNT:

No. 4: Tennessee Titans (7-7, first in AFC South)

Remaining schedule: vs. Texans, vs. Cowboys, at Jaguars 

No. 5 (first wild card): Baltimore Ravens (9-5, second in AFC North)

The Ravens can clinch a playoff spot in Week 16 with a win over Atlanta and a loss or tie by either the Dolphins or Patriots.

Remaining schedule: vs. Falcons, vs. Steelers, at Bengals

No. 6 (second wild card): Los Angeles Chargers (8-6, second in AFC West)

The Chargers can clinch a playoff spot in Week 16 with a win versus Green Bay and losses by both the Raiders and Patriots.

Remaining schedule: at Colts, vs. Rams, at Broncos

No. 7 (third wild card): Miami Dolphins (8-6, second in AFC East)

Remaining schedule: vs. Packers, at Patriots, vs. Jets 

ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN:

No. 8: New England Patriots (7-7, third in AFC East)

Remaining schedule: at Colts, vs. Rams, at Broncos

No. 9: Jacksonville Jaguars (7-8, second in AFC South)

Remaining schedule: at Texans, vs. Titans

No. 10: New York Jets (7-8, fourth in AFC East)

After losing to the Jaguars, the Jets can be eliminated from playoff contention in Week 16 with wins by the Chargers, Dolphins, Patriots and Ravens. They can also be eliminated with a Browns loss combin with wins by the Chargers, Dolphins and Patriots.

Remaining schedule: at Seahawks, at Dolphins

No. 11: Las Vegas Raiders (6-8, third in AFC West)

The Raiders can be eliminated from playoff contention in Week 16 with a loss and wins by both the Chargers and the Dolphins or a loss and wins by both the Chargers and the Patriots.

Remaining schedule: at Steelers, vs. 49ers, vs. Chiefs

No. 12: Cleveland Browns (6-8, third in AFC North)

The Browns can be eliminated from playoff contention in Week 16 with a loss or with wins by the Chargers, Ravens and Dolphins.

Remaining schedule: vs. Saints, at Commanders, at Steelers

No. 13: Pittsburgh Steelers (6-8, fourth in AFC North)

The Steelers can be eliminated from playoff contention in Week 16 with a loss or with wins by both the Chargers and the Dolphins.

Remaining schedule: vs. Raiders, at Ravens, vs. Browns

ELIMINATED: Houston Texans, Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts

NFC Playoff Picture

WHO’S CURRENTLY IN:

No. 1 seed: Philadelphia Eagles (13-1, first in NFC East)

The Eagles clinched a playoff spot by beating the Giants on Dec. 11. They can clinch both the NFC East title and the NFC’s number one seed (including a first-round bye and home-field advantage) in Week 16 with a win over the Cowboys.

Remaining schedule: at Cowboys, vs. Saints, vs. Giants

No. 2 seed: Minnesota Vikings (11-3, first in NFC North)

The Vikings clinched the NFC North title by beating the Colts on Dec. 17.

Remaining schedule: vs. Giants, at Packers, at Bears

No. 3 seed: San Francisco 49ers (10-4, first in NFC West)

The 49ers clinched the NFC West title by beating the Seahawks on Dec. 15.

Remaining schedule: vs. Commanders, at Raiders, vs. Cardinals

No. 5: Dallas Cowboys (10-4, second in NFC East)

The Cowboys clinched a playoff spot with losses by both the Seahawks and Commanders in Week 15.

Remaining schedule: vs. Eagles, at Titans, at Commanders

TEAMS IN THE HUNT:

No. 4: Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-8, first in NFC South)

Remaining schedule: vs. Bengals, at Cardinals, vs. Panthers, at Falcons 

No. 6: New York Giants (8-5-1, third in NFC East)

The Giants can clinch a playoff spot in Week 16 with a win and losses by both the Commanders and Lions; a win and losses by both the Commanders and Seahawks; or a win and losses by both the Lions and Seahawks.

No. 7: Washington Commanders (7-6-1, fourth in NFC East)
