VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. – In News 3’s newest “We’re Open” segment, we take a look at a huge entertainment facility that recently opened in Hampton Roads.
Apex Entertainment opened in downtown Virginia Beach at old Dick’s Sporting Goods last month. It’s 85,000 square feet and has just about every family-friendly entertainment you can imagine. It includes indoor mini golf, ax throwing, sports simulators, go-karts, a high ropes course, bowling and an arcade game. There is also a restaurant and two bars.
“We really care about everyone, between 5 and 75 I want to say,” said Mike Duckworth, Apex’s sales director.
Some of the attractions, such as laser tag, have a military theme. Duckworth says they are eager to welcome service members when military restrictions allow.
Jason Redman says he has been with the Navy since 1992 and is now retired. He sees himself as an Apex enthusiast.
“I was just blown away by what they did with it – how they maximized the space from the top of the ceiling with the high ropes course to the first floor with that arcade,” Redman exclaimed.
He added that not only is he intrigued by the number of attractions in the building, but he’s also impressed with the efforts to bring the military into some of the themed areas, including a submarine-themed escape room that is about to open.
“Hampton Roads, we are one of the largest consortia in the country. We have more bases than anywhere else in the country and Apex recognizes that, ”said Redman, who works with several nonprofits and loves that Apex is community minded.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the sales manager states that capacity is limited to 250 and that masks must be worn unless guests are seated at a table and eat or drink. He also emphasized that after each use, employees disinfect equipment such as harnesses for the high ropes course, equipment for laser tags and helmets for go-karts.
The number of participants is currently limited to 10 people. Duckworth also said the VIP bowling area, which is separate, is also popular for guests to make reservations.
