Meek was born in Tallahassee, Florida in 1926, in accordance to her congressional biography. Democratic Rep. Darren Soto of Florida equally lauded Meek as a trailblazer, “with a large coronary heart & a great deal courage.”

“She was a winner of civil legal rights, health care, training, careers & housing. She safeguarded our condition through Hurricane Andrew & base closures. We will attempt to adhere to her remarkable legacy!” he tweeted.

GOP Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart of Florida named Meek “an icon and a must have pal.”

Meek is survived by her three little ones, 7 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
