You didn’t have any hesitation about undertaking it?
My greatest matter was, was it likely to be virtual yet again? A digital problem does not essentially appeal to me as a dwell performer and a stand-up. I don’t know if that would have been as pretty. But it was prepared to be back in a location with individuals providing out awards, owning a superior time. It will continue to be socially distanced and accountable. I’m the host, and I’m onstage by myself, so I will not see none of you folks. [Laughs.]
What type of sensibility are you hoping to deliver to this year’s exhibit?
There was a lot of great tv on in the previous calendar year and, owing to the pandemic, lots of of us viewed way more tv than ordinary. We want to blend these items alongside one another — reveals that you read of but didn’t genuinely look at, blended with some shows that you know. Although we’re dressed up and sporting tuxedos, I never want that Oscars sense — that [haughty laughter] ha, ha, ha, ha.
Do you imagine that variety of elitism has been turning viewers off from awards exhibits in current years?
I was telling the writers, let us eliminate the velvet rope of it all — the feeling that, when you glance at these reveals, this is for them. Me being on a network sitcom … streamers and cable are actually what the Emmys are about, the additional avant-garde points. The good tv. It begun to have this emotion like folks are not truly invited in the space. We all do a work in this article. Some men and women have far more severe extraordinary displays that are exciting and intriguing to watch. And some people have veg-out, “sit down and relax” television. Let us choose the judgment out. That’s what I want to do.
Is it really hard for viewers to get enthusiastic about celebrating renowned people today in the midst of a pandemic?
People today have extremely certain feelings about this and rightfully so. I absolutely want the stars to come out and have fun. And there is a desire for that — men and women just want to experience a evening out, done as safely and securely as doable. But I also realize that on any given working day, and dependent on what our governor is experience here, these issues could alter. I’m remaining hopeful at this moment — attempting to have that spirit of, let us get again to some normalcy.

Would it help to introduce some new award categories?
We have talked about this. Just the a person line in the sequence that you adore so considerably. The rest of the exhibit was, eh, Alright. But the way this man or woman mentioned that thing? Or when an individual cried the toughest. There’s just not sufficient recognition for the details.
