TUCSON, Arizona (AP) – Disgraced guru and cult leader Keith Raniere is currently being held in an Arizona federal prison that specializes in sex offenders.
Raniere, 60, was transferred to Tucson Prison in January after being sentenced to 120 years in prison last year for sex slaving some followers branded with his initials and sexually abusing a 15-year-old had. He was convicted of foreign smuggling, sex trafficking, extortion and obstruction of justice, among other things.
Raniere was the founder of NXIVM, a self-improvement company and cult that used to sexually abuse women.
The maximum security prison previously housed the mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger, the black market drug dealer Ross Ulbricht and the former doctor of the US gymnastics team, as well as the convicted serial rapist Larry Nassar, who was moved to another facility after an attack by his colleague Tucson inmates.
The facility is one of several facilities across the country operated under the Sex Offender Management Program. The aim is to keep inmates safe and better tailored to their treatment by accommodating a higher percentage of sex offenders who may be attacked by other inmates in other prisons. The Arizona Daily Star reported.
