In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Yasmin a son, Samy and two sisters, Dorreya and Safa.
In 1978, he graduated second in his class of 800 from the Alexandria Health care School in Egypt. But he was less intrigued in practicing drugs than in unraveling mysteries, which had been an obsession of his ever because he was captivated by the novels of Enid Blyton as a little one.
That obsession was at the heart of his work at the C.D.C. “We go into the basic principles of how a condition transpires, the mechanism,” he reported in an interview with Stat, a health care internet site, in 2016. “Putting parts together. Fixing puzzles.”
He earned a master’s in pathology from Alexandria College. But because autopsies ended up not permitted in Egypt for religious factors, he did his residency in anatomic pathology at Emory University in Atlanta, wherever he also gained a doctorate in experimental pathology.
He then went to do the job at the C.D.C. and turned a naturalized American citizen.
Described by James LeDuc, a former colleague, as “kind of the magic formula weapon for a lot of what was accomplished at C.D.C. on emerging illnesses,” he was awarded the Section of Wellness and Human Expert services Secretary’s Award for Distinguished Assistance, the department’s highest honor, nine situations.
“What distinguished him as a researcher was creative imagination, collaboration, reliable scientific methodology and a wide awareness base.,” Dr. Inger K. Damon of the C.D.C.’s National Centre for Rising and Zoonotic Infectious Disorders claimed in an e-mail.
Dr. Zaki had no illusions that his perform would at any time be concluded.
“We assume we know all the things,” he informed The New York Situations in 2007, “but we do not know the idea of the iceberg.”
