FRISCO, Texas, May 18, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Gearbox Entertainment today announced that 2 million Borderlands 3 players have contributed to medical research by playing Borderlands Science, an interactive science discovery (SDG) game set in the critically and commercially successful looting action -Title. Today we celebrate and look back on the successful first year of Borderlands Science in Borderlands 3, which was developed by Gearbox in collaboration with Massively Multiplayer Online Science (MMOS) and researchers from McGill University and the Microsetta Initiative. Borderlands Science allows players to map the human gut microbiome to advance critical medical studies while receiving in-game rewards.
Borderlands Science’s integration into Borderlands 3 has collected enough scientifically relevant data to compete with most longstanding SDGs, and in some areas even exceeds them. To date, the results from Borderlands Science are amazing:
- 2 million active participants have solved at least one puzzle.
- The five best weekly participants since launch contributed more than 3,200 hours.
- 81.2 million puzzle solutions from Borderlands Science players; and,
- 184 years of playtime in Borderlands Science.
“Borderlands players continue to humiliate and surprise me with their eagerness to explore the alternate experience of Borderlands Science within a game that brings their deep cleverness and incredible energy to the benefit of medical research in action,” he said Randy Pitchford, Founder of Gearbox Entertainment Company. “The enthusiasm for Borderlands Science confirms my belief that interactive entertainment plays an exciting positive role in meeting the great challenges facing our species.”
The data collected by Borderlands Science will help researchers map the human gut microbiome and better understand a variety of diseases. Last September, Nature Biotechnology, a monthly journal dealing with the science and business of biotechnology, published an article by Randy Pitchford on the game’s applicability to future research, including the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The participation of the Borderlands community has exceeded our most optimistic forecast,” said Jérôme Waldispühl, professor, McGill University. “After just a year, this massive contribution allowed us to analyze up to 84% of our original mapping of microbial DNA. We are now carefully reviewing the information participants have gained from each step and look forward to applying those results to new microbiome studies ASAP. If participation stays at that level, we can map our microbes at a much higher resolution than originally thought. ”
“Today we’re celebrating the first anniversary of Borderlands Science, but that story started 6 years ago when I first met Randy Pitchford and we’ve made a mutual promise to work together on something special, “said Atilla Szantner, Co-Founder and CEO of MMOS.” The enthusiasm of many exceptional people at Gearbox brought Borderlands Science to life. It is the contribution of the dedicated Borderlands community that made our project such a resounding success in the history of video games and citizen science. “
