Record producer and convicted killer Phil Spector died of natural causes on Saturday at the age of 80. This comes from a statement from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

An official cause of death is being determined by the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner.

Spector was sentenced to 19 years in prison in 2009 for the fatal shooting of actress Lana Clarkson in 2009. The actress was found slumped in a chair in Spector’s California mansion with a gunshot wound to the roof of the mouth.

Originally from Bronx, New York, Spector has produced recordings of stars like the Beatles, Ike and Tina Turner, Cher and the Ramones.

The influential producer who developed a style of production known as the “Wall of Sound” formed Teddy Bears and recorded the group’s only hit, “Knowing Him Is Loving Him,” while he was still in high school was.

Spector’s approach to record production – the layering of instrumental tracks and percussion that underpinned a number of hits on his Philles label – was a major influencer of pop music in the 1960s.
