ALEXANDRIA, VA – If you are interested in a bit of vintage theatre, head straight around to Minimal Theatre of Alexandria for a new generation, Wait Until finally Dim, which is edgy and provocative, and occasionally head scratchingly obtuse, but with a surprising properly-staged ending that you won’t see coming. Of program, you may well have found the 1968 movie edition (starring Audrey Hepburn) of the phase participate in that ran for 373 performances on Broadway in 1966, but this refresher creation live and onstage in your neighborhood will make you glad to have access to dwell theatre once again!

Here’s the plot as described in the software notes by Heather Benjamin, the production’s director, who made the most of this participating, but often perplexing product. “Frederick Knott’s perform commences by introducing three con men—Roat (Adam R. Adkins), Mike (Brendan Quinn), and Carlino (Brendan Chaney)—who are in research of a doll made up of illegal drugs. They set a lure for Susy (Mel Gumina), the heroine we do not fulfill till the quite finish of the first scene. It turns out that a year before, Susy misplaced her sight in an accident, and just 6 months later, she married Sam (Ryan Washington), a photographer.”

Other cast associates you will meet are Gloria (Julia Stimson on the night I saw the participate in, and Juliet Strom on alternate evenings), the young upstairs neighbor, who bedevils Susy by going home furniture about and lying about other issues that are integral to the plot. Susy’s partner, Sam, (properly-played by Ryan Washington) appears entirely bereft of empathy for his handicapped wife and as these, just appears troublesome and overbearing. I discovered it weird that these two would truly drop in really like and marry! (But which is just me!) Two additional solid members are the Policemen performed by Bill Gery and Michael Townsend.

If you noticed the 1968 motion picture, Wait Until eventually Dim, with the remarkable Audrey Hepburn, Mel Gumina, who certainly carries the display, appears to be quite considerably like a young, lovely Audrey Hepburn and keeps the enjoy transferring and interesting. For me, evoking Hepburn is a huge additionally, but even greater, she can act! Her scenes in which the con adult men have crept into her basement apartment, (made by Julie Fischer) are gripping.

That condominium set, by the way, appears to be specifically like my notion of a 1966 standard Greenwich Village basement condominium with a established of stairs major down to the living space and substantial basement home windows with venetian blinds and a perspective of the street. The household furniture is shabby chic mid-century classic. A small disturbingly, there is a front door that is primarily still left open, even although there is a blind man or woman dwelling in the condominium. Also, a minimal odd for me (I was dwelling in New York in 1966), they have a washing equipment. Wow! Most folks in luxurious flats Still do not have washing equipment in New York city! But I’m keen to suspend my judgement on that for now…

Mel behaves pretty substantially like you would expect a blind man or woman to act—stumbling above furnishings which will get moved out of spot and precisely displaying some confusion, but retaining her awesome right until the plot to discover the doll heats up by means of the machinations of the 3 con artists. These fellas are seemingly “stooges” who (it appears to me), need to very easily see via the roadblocks established up by the “mastermind” of the three (smarmily performed by Adam R. Adkins). Just sayin’. The young woman, Gloria, is integral to the plot and, as fantastically performed by Julia, is by turns necessarily mean and irritating, then, when the plot to identify the doll receives seriously really serious and everyday living-threatening, well—I’m not heading to give that absent. I will notify you that the combat choreographer Stefan Sittig’s managing of one particular of the last scenes will mail chills down your spine. Take pleasure in the clearly show!
