NFL Week 1: Broncos-Seahawks top plays, Wilson returns to Seattle

Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season ends Monday with Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos traveling to the Pacific Northwest to take on the Seattle Seahawks in one of the most anticipated games of the year.

A third-round draft pick of the Seahawks in 2012, Wilson spent the first 10 seasons of his NFL career with Seattle before Denver acquired the veteran signal-caller in March.

Wilson, who recently inked a five-year, $245 million extension with Denver, will become the Broncos’ sixth different quarterback to start a Week 1 contest in the past six seasons (2017 Trevor Siemian, 2018 Case Keenum, 2019 Joe Flacco, 2020 Drew Lock, 2021 Teddy Bridgewater) when he takes the field Monday night.

On the other side, journeyman Geno Smith won a quarterback battle with Lock to replace Wilson and will start a season opener for the first time since 2014. Smith is 13-21 as a starter in his eight-year NFL career.

Setting the stage

All eyes were on Wilson ahead of kickoff when he walked onto Lumen Field for the first time as a member of the Broncos. Denver leads the all-time series 35-21, but Seattle has won three of the past five matchups.

Tough love

As expected, Seahawks fans sent boos Wilson’s way when he took the field for pregame activities.
