The National Rifle Association (NRA) has taunted President Joe Biden over his 2020 pledge to “defeat” the gun rights group. In a tweet, the NRA mocked Biden and his love for ice cream, saying that he could enjoy his treat while they protected the Second Amendment.

The tweet, which was posted on April 22, 2021, read, “We’ll keep fighting to protect your Second Amendment rights, @JoeBiden. You can enjoy your ice cream.” It included a photo of Biden eating an ice cream cone with the caption, “Your move, Mr. President.”

Biden has long been a vocal critic of the NRA, which he has blamed for opposing common-sense gun control measures and contributing to the nation’s epidemic of gun violence. In his 2020 campaign platform, he promised to “defeat” the NRA and enact gun control reforms, including a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, universal background checks, and stronger laws to prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands.

The NRA, which has not endorsed a candidate for president since 1984 but has traditionally supported Republican candidates, spent over $30 million in 2020 on ads and other forms of election spending, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics.

The NRA has also faced controversy in recent years, including allegations of financial improprieties, infighting among its leadership, and declining membership numbers. In 2019, the organization filed for bankruptcy protection and announced plans to relocate from New York to Texas, though a judge later dismissed the bankruptcy case.

Despite its challenges, the NRA remains a powerful political force, with millions of members and a well-funded lobbying arm that has successfully blocked many gun control measures over the years.

The NRA’s tweet mocking Biden over his ice cream habit was widely criticized on social media, with many commenters saying it was childish and inappropriate for a group that claims to defend the Second Amendment.

Others, however, praised the NRA for standing up against what they see as Biden’s assault on gun rights. Some pointed out that the Second Amendment protects not just the right to bear arms, but also the right to free speech, and that the NRA has every right to express its views on political issues.

Biden has yet to respond to the NRA’s taunt, but he has continued to press for gun control measures in the wake of a spate of mass shootings in recent years, including the 2018 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, which killed 17 people.

In a recent speech, Biden urged Congress to pass a series of gun control bills, including a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, expanded background checks, and measures to prevent guns from falling into the hands of domestic abusers and other dangerous individuals.

“These ideas aren’t radical,” Biden said. “They’re supported by a majority of Americans, including a majority of gun owners.”

Whether Biden’s gun control measures will succeed in passing Congress remains to be seen, but it’s clear that the NRA will continue to be a vocal opponent of any efforts to restrict gun rights. And as long as the guns-vs.-ice-cream debate rages on, it seems unlikely that either side will back down anytime soon.
