Selena Gomez thinks her previous relationships are “cursed”.
The 28-year-old singer has had high profile romances with greats like Justin Bieber and The Weeknd but now said she felt “less than” in many of her previous relationships.
Selena spoke as she explained why the word “rare” meant so much to her after getting it tattooed on her neck, naming her makeup line Rare Beauty after it, and using the term for the title of her latest album .
Speaking to Vogue Australia, she said, “I think most of my experiences in relationships are cursed. I was way too young to be exposed to certain things when in relationships. I guess I had to find this word for myself because I felt so less than in previous relationships and never really felt the same.
“It wasn’t even necessarily like, ‘Oh, I feel like this, let me sing it.’ It was almost like, ‘Actually, I have to feel this way.’ I think that my family and my chosen family – I feel surrounded by real people. “
Meanwhile, the ‘Lose You to Love Me’ hitmaker has been known to speak openly about her mental health, and recently said this has given her a “sense of freedom” as she tries to normalize conversations about it.
She shared, “I think it’s less scary when you talk about it. So that’s a sense of freedom that I gained when I did.
“I think I had a moment where I felt different, like, ‘Why am I reacting this way?’ ‘Why do I feel the way I do and no one else?’ and I had to find out. I think my trip was all about my timing. “
And Selena also criticized the “impossible standards of beauty of society” that had a negative impact on people’s mental health.
She said, “Society keeps telling us we’re not enough, so I wanted to start a brand to challenge and remove that pressure – to change the conversation.
“My goal with Rare Beauty is to break these unrealistic beauty standards. I’ve seen from my own experience how these impossible standards of beauty have affected my mental health, and I know a lot of people who felt the same. “
