NEW YORK (AP) – When the Oprah Winfrey Network series “Queen Sugar” debuted in 2016, Cierra Glaude was the team’s first production assistant, an early bird responsible for keeping an eye on the actors on the set.

“I’m basically your custodian, your sister, friend, mother, aunt,” she explained. “I know all of your dietary restrictions. I basically get them through the day.”

In two short years it was the third time that the young filmmaker worked with Emmy winner Ava DuVernay, created “Queen Sugar” and commissioned Glaude to work on the Oscar-nominated film “Selma” in 2014 and on her CBS pilot ” to work. For justice. “

On “Selma”, Glaude was an additional PA who worked with background actors as they marched on the Selma to Montgomery freeway. She was the assistant director on For Justice, where Glaude admits that she “made some mistakes that I learned from very quickly”.

And on “Queen Sugar,” she continued as the first team PA for season two and was promoted to the writer’s room during season three.

Now she is sitting in the director’s chair – in the truest sense of the word.

Glaude, 29, has made three episodes for the series’ fifth season, which premieres Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET.
