USFL Week 5 Live Updates: Gamblers Lead Stallions in Fourth
As the USFL’s Week 5 continued, the Houston Gamblers took control of their matchup against the Birmingham Stallions in the fourth quarter and were able to secure the win.
The Stallions started off strong with a two-yard touchdown run by Joe Cribbs early in the first quarter, but the Gamblers were quick to answer back with a touchdown of their own from Todd Dillon to Richard Johnson.
The second quarter saw both teams trade field goals, and the score remained tied at 10-10 going into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Stallions regained the lead with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Cliff Stoudt to Jim Smith. However, the Gamblers fought back and tied the game once again with a 38-yard field goal.
But it was in the fourth quarter where the Gamblers really shone, scoring two back-to-back touchdowns to take a commanding lead over the Stallions. Todd Dillon threw a 26-yard pass to Ricky Sanders, followed by a 12-yard touchdown to Richard Johnson.
The Stallions attempted to mount a comeback, with Cliff Stoudt throwing a 12-yard touchdown pass to Jim Smith to bring the score to 27-17. However, the Gamblers defense held strong and prevented any further scoring from Birmingham.
The final score read 27-17 in favor of the Houston Gamblers, with Todd Dillon finishing the game with 260 yards passing and three touchdowns. Richard Johnson had a big day, recording 154 yards receiving and two touchdowns.
This win puts the Gamblers at 3-2 on the season, while the Stallions fall to 2-3. It was an exciting matchup between two talented teams, and both will surely be looking to bounce back in Week 6.
In other USFL Week 5 action, the New Jersey Generals and Michigan Panthers faced off in a tightly-contested matchup. The Panthers got off to a quick start with a 70-yard touchdown pass from Bobby Hebert to Anthony Carter, but the Generals fought back with two touchdowns of their own in the second quarter.
The game remained close throughout, with both teams trading scores and the lead changing hands several times. But in the end, it was the Generals that came out on top with a 31-28 victory.
Quarterback Brian Sipe had a big game for New Jersey, throwing for 259 yards and three touchdowns. Herschel Walker rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown, while Bobby Hebert finished with 295 yards passing and three touchdowns for Michigan.
The Generals improve to 4-1 with the win, while the Panthers fall to 2-3.
The Oakland Invaders also notched a big win in Week 5, defeating the Tampa Bay Bandits 21-13. Quarterback Bobby Hebert had another solid performance, throwing for 226 yards and two touchdowns.
The Invaders defense was the real star of the show, however, intercepting Bandits quarterback John Reaves three times and holding Tampa Bay’s offense to just 13 points.
With the win, the Invaders improve to 4-1 while the Bandits fall to 2-3.
Overall, USFL Week 5 was full of exciting matchups and stunning performances. With just a few weeks left in the regular season, teams will be looking to make their push for the playoffs and prove themselves as contenders for the championship.
