South Carolina Democrats’ nomination of state Rep. Krystle Matthews in a primary runoff on Tuesday makes her the latest of Black candidates across the South who Democrats have nominated in Senate and governor’s races.
In North Carolina, Democrats chose former state Supreme Court justice Cheri Beasley as their nominee for a hotly contested Senate seat. She will face Republican Rep. Ted Budd. And in Kentucky, Democrats picked Charles Booker to take on Sen. Rand Paul.
Meanwhile, in Alabama, Democrats nominated Will Boyd to face Republican Katie Britt in the state’s Senate race. In Arkansas, Democrats nominated Chris Jones, a nuclear engineer and minister, to face Republican Sarah Sanders, former President Donald Trump’s one-time press secretary, in the race for governor.
In Georgia, Democrats chose former state legislative leader Stacey Abrams for a rematch with Gov. Brian Kemp, and Sen. Raphael Warnock, who won his seat in a special election, is seeking a full term.
Warnock’s Republican opponent, former University of Georgia running back Herschel Walker, is seeking to join Scott and become the second Black Republican in the Senate.
Another person may join the slate in August: Rep. Val Demings, who is running for the Democratic nomination in Florida to face Republican Sen. Marco Rubio this fall.
